eating well, living well, sustaining

I have a bit of a crush on preserving and canning now. This past weekend I fell in love with all those fresh vegetables and fruit, CSA harvested, brought in by caring hands and artfully made into something we can have with us, in our cupboards, throughout the year. There was something very soothing in using these foods, bringing out their flavors, knowing that will not be thrown out. I felt as if we were making little treasures for ourselves, little presents to look forward to in the {near} future.

This canning. This preserving. It is an art made not only to sustain us in our winter tide, but, I truly believe, it is an art formed out of a deep longing for {womanly} community. To be together in the kitchen. Learning, laughing, taking food and creating with it. I love this community aspect of it. Since we have moved out West I have not really had the chance to cook with friends in such a long while --I had forgotten how much I miss it.
sooooo, what is cooking in your kitchen?

  1. We received our first CSA box on Tuesday! So last night we had fresh lettuce, tomatoes, asparagus and potatoes (with meatloaf), all fresh from the farm!

  2. We're growing some pickling cucumbers this year. Oh, I hope the tiny crop is enough for a few jars!

  4. This is soooo good!
The kids are usually at my side when the canning begins but it sounds like a wonderful experience with friends. A whole different connection.
My pickling cucumber seedlings are going strong. I hope we get a good harvest this year. Love pickles from home!
Thanks for sharing your experience. It looks wonderful!

  5. Oooh, that looks lovely! I really want to jar tomato sauce again. I haven't done it for years. It's so much better than using canned tomatoes from the store!

  6. Let's do it again sometime soon!

Over labor day weekend, actually, there is a pick-your-own Roma tomato weekend at a farm about an hour drive away where the tomatoes are 25 cents a pound. I picked about 50 lbs in under an hour, and then spent the ENTIRE weekend canning them, both as crushed tomatoes and as sauce. (I have since learned a few short cuts so it won't take quite so long). I would love to plan to do that with a friend! : )
