midweek messiness :: white wondering

I want nothing more these days than my house to be clean scrubbed white with the scent of fresh lily white roses and the stung smell of lavender and lemon clinging to the sheets.

I wonder why white is the quintessential color of summer for so many of us. After these last few days of impossible messes, I am starting to think that my color of choice for the summer should be a dark muddy gray instead. Something to blend and hide the stains of summer.

Alas, I think nothing will be white again, in this dirtied berried busy buoyed house clinging to unbleached, fast, muddied colored lines.  Perhaps not until the boys are sent off to school in the fall. Perhaps, even then, my hope is futile.

  1. Bright white sheets blowing in the breeze. I was always excited at the beginning of the summer to put white, crisp sheets on the beds. You are correct they rarely stay that bright white. Thank you for reminding me of that time. I love your words - they are exactly what I envision.
    Enjoy the white that you can squeeze in with all the boys messiness.

    1. I love white. I love the smell of the crisp sheets bleached by the sun. These days it seems everything gets so messy so very quicky.

  3. Those flowers are beautiful! Are they peonies? Love all the layered petals. I know what you mean about the not-staying-white thing - I have a few white tees we've been given for my littley - grass/carrot/general muck all seems to be immediately wiped upon them! Thank goodness for the bleaching power of sunshine! x

    1. They are peonies Helen!
      Toddler muck happens so fast on those white tees doesn't it? I forget those days are year round muck of strained food and spit up!
      But in someways they are the best days! xo

  4. Ahh white peonies! I've missed coming to this beautiful space... I'm only now exhaling and excited by my older son's last day of school (finally!) But as you said, that means a whole lot of disorder - on top of what's already there! I dream about your vision of an all white space perfumed with summer blooms :) xo

    1. Oh thank you so Catherine for your sweet words! Your comments always make me smile. And yes, there is always a bit of exhaling after the last bit of school. And embracing the chaos. I hope your summer days are going well so far. xo

  5. Wonderful. I have just picked white roses, but in this house of boys not much else is white, ever.

    1. Yes, 3 is the magic number of fun and messiness! I look at photos of my house before I had my third and I am always astonished at the order I seemed to have....it was ever so long ago! xo

  9. oh, I know the feeling.
    but what I remind myself if that messiness holds a great lesson about what's really important.

  12. I can never get enough white, one good thing about my kids being pretty much all grown up would be having more white stuff, if only we didn't have so many dogs!

    1. I know that sentiment as well. We have two cats and two dogs as well! And live in LA! White is almost non-existent at my house. Thanks so for stopping by Annie. xxoo
